This session was by far the craziest thing I’ve ever done to “get the shot,” and I’ve done a lot of things for the sake of a photo. (Like climbing Angel’s Landing in the snow and ice…. but you can read all about that HERE.) When Kylie reached out to me to book an adventure session, I mentioned going out to a tiny island off the coast of Oahu called Chinaman’s Hat, and she was immediately on board. I couldn’t have picked a better couple for this wild and crazy session; Nate and Kylie were absolutely up for the adventure.

My husband and I met them both on the east side of Oahu with paddle boards in hand. (In hindsight, a kayak would have made SO much more sense, so if you’re reading this and thinking about making your own adventurous trek out to Chinaman’s Hat island, I would highly recommend kayaking over paddle boarding. Learn from our mistake; it will save you time, energy, and jellyfish stings…. No really, we all got stung by those pesky jellyfish, but it didn’t bring down Nate or Kylie’s adventurous spirit at all – another reason why they were a DREAM to shoot!) It took us about an hour to get out there on our paddle boards, but once we finally got to the island, that’s where the real magic happened. This island is so small it’s pretty easy to climb and hike it all the way around. We made our way up to the very top, and got some amazing shots with Oahu and the ocean in the background.

Kylie and Nate were not only up for paddle boarding out to the island and back, but they were so willing to be vulnerable and playful that it made the photos THAT much better. There were times I think they forgot I was photographing them (which is the ultimate goal!). These two are high school sweethearts, and I think these photos really depict their goofy personalities and how in love they are with each other.

We ended the session playing in the water as dusk settled, and those particular images are some of my absolute favourite in my portfolio. Thank you Kylie and Nate for being up for absolutely anything, going along with whatever came our way (even if it was jellyfish stings), and for letting me in to document your relationship.
