The sun was setting in Page, Arizona. Allyson and Andrew had written their own vows, and as light peeked below the horizon they spoke those intimate promises to each other in the midst of their closet friends and family. They promised to love each other forever, grow old together, and to start a family built on the love of Christ. Everyone (including me) was in tears. It was one of the most beautiful moments I have ever witnessed. Oh yeah… did I mention this all happened on the edge of a canyon cliff?
It all started last October when I photographed these two cuties in Big Bend National Park. (You can view that session HERE.) Somehow I mistakenly thought it was their engagement photos. Hint: It wasn’t. Cue the awkward turtle. But it didn’t matter, because around Christmas time Andrew finally dropped down on one knee, and asked Allyson to be his forever. She said yes! (Obviously!) They began planning a traditional wedding in their hometown of Odessa, TX, and asked me to be their photographer. It wasn’t until around February when I got a message from Allyson saying their plans had changed, and now they wanted to elope. What I loved about their decision to go the unconventional route, was that they wanted their day to be all about the love they shared for each other and nothing else. They didn’t care about big fancy ballrooms or 4 course meals. All they cared about was saying I do and starting their journey as husband and wife together. I couldn’t have agreed more.
Looking back on their breathtaking day, it’s hard to even summon words to describe how magical it was. From the incredible views Page had to offer, to their intimate cuddles in Antelope Canyon, to the joyful fist bump Andrew threw in the air the second his dad (who officiated them) announced them man and wife, the day was unreal. Since I’m still speechless, I’ll let the photos do the rest of the talking.
But I will end with this:
Andrew & Allyson, I am so honored to have had the joy of witnessing and capturing your wedding day. I want you to know how special your elopement was, and I don’t for one second take for granted you trusting me to document your love story (twice!). I pray you have many blessings in your marriage, and that one day you’ll share these photos with your kids (and laugh as you watch their mouths drop open… at least that’s what I image happening.) Congratulations you two newlyweds! Now go start your grand adventure… <3
