I think education is so important to your growth as a photographer. As I’ve built my business I have taken multiple online posing and marketing for photography courses, but I’d never attended a photography workshop in person… until now.
I heard about WRKSHP this past summer, and immediately was interested. The lineup of teachers was insane. Then I found out my fellow photographer friend Alex wanted to go. So we jumped and bought our tickets. Sitting here on the other side of attending WRKSHP I’m extremely glad I did it. Not only did I meet a ton of other photographer friends, but I learned so much I’m still working on implementing into my business. Let’s just say 2018 is going to be a good year thanks to everything I learned at WRKSHP! I learned how to create a better relationship with my couples to create images that are filled with LIFE. I learned that the dream is free, the hustle is sold separately (aka DO WORK). I learned that in order to create a business that lasts, you need to figure out who you are at your core, know your why, and let that seep into everything you do. I learned about a billion other things, but needless to say, I left this workshop overwhelmed in the best way.
In addition to the education style classes, I also took a couple of live shoot classes. The images below are photos from all 3 days of WRKSHP. They are a combo of some live shoots, photographing real couples, models, and other attendees. Enjoy enjoy!
This first group of photos is from the first day when we got about 10 minutes to take real life couples out on the streets of Brooklyn to shoot! It was a good challenge to get that real emotion in only 10 minutes.
These photos below were taken of my fellow attendees Rebecca and Alex during our class with Chellise Michael Photography. The class was titled Never Scout Again. The intention was to walk the streets of Brooklyn finding beauty in the spontaneity while finding places to shoot on the go. It was down-pouring during our session, so instead we stayed inside the building and did something sort of similar. Chellise and Michael gave us the challenge to try and create different looks in a limited space. For example, say you’re in a room for getting ready photos on a wedding day. How are you going to create the best work you can in that room?
I’ve already blogged the full set from this live shoot, but I still wanted to include a few photos here in case you didn’t get a chance to see that post. Since I started my photography business I’ve looked up to Lauren Scotti for her artistry and KILLER images. It was so amazing to watch her work, and to get to photograph Emily and Tyler, the couple, along with everyone! It was such a rad time!
Throughout the 3 day workshop there were instagram challenges going on with different categories like “Best Black and White Photo of a Teacher” or “Best Photo that Represents WKRSHP.” I pulled India and Jay aside to see if I could knock out a few categories in one. India was another teacher at WRKSHP whose work blows me away literally every time I see it. I think my intention was originally to get a black and white photo of her and her hubby Jay, but the second they got in front of my camera they were a bunch of silly goofballs. I loved it. The one of Jay doing the mermaid is a real treasure hahaha.
Lastly, I took a live shoot class taught by Heidi Browne of Forged in the North that focused purely on high fashion photography. I took it because it was different than anything I’d ever done before. My sweet spot that I love so much is couple photography, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. I LOVE how these editorial fashion images turned out, and I’m stoked to share them with you!
My experience at WRKSHP was all I could have asked for and more. I learned things I’ll takeaway for years to come, and getting to hang with fellow photographers in New York in the fall was an absolute DREAM. If you want to see what all the hype is about or are thinking about attending in the future, check out their website HERE.
Now I’d love to hear your feedback on what you guys think of these images!? I’m really proud of what I was able to create at this workshop, and I can’t wait for some exciting things to come in 2018…
